The first life saved!

The baby in the picture is the first life that was saved through MKAIC, this was in 2010. Following a successful anaesthetic by Prof Irestedt from Karolinska, a baby boy was delivered by Caesarean Section. He was carried to the resuscitation table by the anaesthetic nurse.
The baby was blue and wasn’t breathing, and yet the nurse didn’t attempt resuscitation. Fortunately Prof Irestedt saw what was happening and put into practice the simple ABC rules that he had been teaching. Using equipment that had been brought from Karolinska that same day, he was able to inflate the baby’s lungs and re-oxygenate the blood. After 10 minutes the baby started breathing by himself and began crying soon after.

How can I help?

Millions of people in the world die of surgically treatable conditions. Acute and emergency care has been hugely under-prioritized and under-resourced in Tanzania and other low-income countries. Life Support Foundation is the organization that has Anesthesia and Intensive care as its focus.

Achievements

Care has been improved, and lives have been saved in 2017. Maternal deaths have decreased by 75 per year at the hospitals in Dar es Salaam during the last two years, according to local statistics. Eva Shanga has completed her specialist training. To encourage the development of anaesthesia is one of our priorities, and Eva will soon be accompanied by 38 more specialists in the hospitals in Tanzania.
– A course in VSDT, Vital Signs Directed Therapy, at Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam in January, with 82 participants.

– A course in obstetric anesthesia and obstetric emergency care at Amana Hospital in Dar es Salaam in May, with 30 participants. Total now trained on Life Support courses is 688.

– Four staff exchanges in paediatric and neonatal acute and intensive care in May, to Karolinska University Hospital in Huddinge and Solna, in co-operation with Astrid Lindgren Children’s Hospital. The two nurses and two trainee doctors came from Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam.

– Two exchanges in obstetric emergency care in August, to BB Stockholm and vinnokliniken

ELIMINATING THE NEED FOR ORPHANAGES

There are currently 5.4 million children living in orphanages worldwide.
80% of children in institutions have a family member they could live with if given support.
Here’s how we’re changing that.
Every day around 800 women die because of complications related to pregnancy and childbirth. Nearly all of these deaths occur in low-resource settings and are preventable.
